Le Soleil: A reconciliation gesture with First Nations through volleyball
John Abbott College men’s volleyball coach Sunil Ramgulam takes part in a volleyball clinic organised for Indigenous athletes.
Here is an excerpt from the article in Le Soleil:
What if part of the reconciliation with First Nations involved sport? It’s a thought that comes quickly to mind when you attend a day at the first edition of FestiVolley 2024, which runs until Sunday on the campus of Université Laval.
The event, organised by Volleyball Québec in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and several other organisations, brought together 65 Indigenous athletes aged 12 to 15 for four days in the capital.
The youths, accompanied by coaches and adults, come from 18 First Nations communities across the province. Some, like the 10-member delegation from La Romaine, took two days to get to Québec City, and even had to travel part of the way in a rowboat before hitting the road!
The goal of the trip: to enable youth and their chaperones to take part in volleyball clinics and develop their technical skills, to understand refereeing and team spirit.
