Procedure
The name change procedure enables Trans* students to have their chosen names appear in certain unofficial documents while studying at John Abbott College.
The chosen name may be used on all unofficial College documents and tools, such as:
- Student ID card
- Class lists
- Lea & omnivox
- Exam rosters
Filing a name change for use at John Abbott College does not change a student’s legal name or records with Government authorities.
Hence, the student’s legal name will still appear on official College documents, such as:
- Transcripts
- Reports to government
- Letters of attestation
- Diplomas and certificates
Students may request the Name Change service, maintained in strict confidence, by:
- Sending an MIO to: Name Change
- Be sure to indicate in the body of your MIO your chosen name.
- The chosen name will then be changed on all unofficial documents going forward, including their MIO.
For any questions about the Name Change procedures, send an MIO to Name Change.
Please note that at times, technological system errors, beyond our control, reverts the unofficial documents and tools to your legal name. If you experience this, please send an MIO to Name Change and the issue will be resolved in a timely manner.
Once your name is changed, if you desire, you can also send an MIO to Student Activities if you wish to replace the picture on your Student ID card. They will walk you through the procedures for this at that time.
