John Abbott College transcends linguistic barriers through the “Prix Goncourt des Lycéens”

Sainte-Anne-De-Bellevue (Quebec) – October 3rd 2023 – John Abbott College, the only English college in North America to participate, is making history by joining the prestigious Prix Goncourt des lycéens. This momentous occasion is cause for celebration as it underscores the college’s commitment to promoting French literature and enriching its students’ literary experiences.

The Prix Goncourt des lycéens is a unique initiative where high school students across France read and analyze a selection of novels from the Goncourt Academy’s list, ultimately choosing the winner. John Abbott College’s involvement in this program marks a significant step in bridging linguistic and cultural boundaries, fostering a deeper appreciation for French literature among its English-speaking students. “The fact that 10 dedicated students from this institution have willingly taken on the challenge of reading 16 novels in just nine weeks during their free time is truly exceptional and a testament to their passion for literature”, says Daniel Rondeau, professor of French at John Abbott College.

The Prix Goncourt des lycéens program commences with the unveiling of the selected books by the esteemed members of the Goncourt Academy. Subsequently, the Fnac retail chain, provides the books to each participating class, including those at John Abbott College. Over the course of two intense months, these dedicated students immerse themselves in the world of French literature, guided by their enthusiastic teachers. Alongside their peers in France, they partake in seven regional meetings, forging connections with acclaimed authors and gaining profound insights into the creative process.

After the rigorous reading period, each class nominates a delegate to present their top three chosen books during regional deliberations, held simultaneously in six cities. From there, each region selects its two representatives and their top three books. The grand finale unfolds in Rennes, the birthplace of the prize, where the Prix Goncourt des lycéens is officially proclaimed and shared with the world.

John Abbott College stands with immense pride as it takes part in this remarkable program, symbolizing the power of literature to transcend borders and languages.
