Charting a More Inclusive Campus at John Abbott College
Launched at the beginning of the academic year, the interactive online tool provides students, employees, and visitors with a detailed way to navigate the College before they even arrive on campus.
Students, employees and visitors can find specific information about the accessibility features available where they are going—not just whether a building is generally considered accessible.
This tool allows users to locate accessibility features throughout the College by floor. This tool serves as a central resource for navigating the campus, making it easy to find accessibility features and everyday amenities, including automatic door openers, accessible parking spaces, water fountains, microwaves, defibrillators, all-gender washrooms, and bike repair stations.
The project was the result of an innovative collaboration between Facilities Management Services (FMS) and Student Services’ Access Centre. The initiative was developed in partnership with Design Shopp and funded by John Abbott College.
With more than 650 students currently registered with the Access Centre, the map has the potential to benefit a significant portion of the College community. At the same time, its practical features are designed for anyone visiting the campus.
“Going somewhere unfamiliar can create a certain level of anxiety for anyone,” said Dominique Godin, project manager with FMS. “We wanted the map to help take some of that uncertainty away and make it inclusive for everyone.”
The project reflects John Abbott College’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion by making it easier for all members of the community to navigate campus with confidence and independence.
