Student Spotlight: Emma Paun Sets the Standard in Sport and Science
After ten years as a competitive swimmer, Emma Paun was looking for a new challenge. She found it in Olympic weightlifting—and in less than a year, she has already qualified for national competition.
A Science student at John Abbott College, Emma began weightlifting in September and progressed at an exceptional pace, qualifying for the 2026 Junior Canadian Weightlifting Championships by lifting more than double her body weight. She now proudly represents John Abbott College as both its sole weightlifting competitor and the only woman in the sport at the College.
Beyond the podium, Emma is an ambassador for perseverance and balance, proving that it is possible to excel academically while competing at a high athletic level. Her journey encourages students—particularly young women—to push boundaries, embrace new challenges, and pursue excellence in spaces where they are underrepresented.
John Abbott College congratulates Emma on her remarkable accomplishments and wishes her continued success in competition, academics, and beyond.
