John Abbott College unveils orange flag, designed by student-artist, in recognition of Truth and Reconciliation

On Monday, September 25, 2023, surrounded by students, employees and community members, John Abbott College unveiled an orange flag on the cupola of the main building of the College.

The design of the orange flag was created by Seven Diamond, a Cree student at John Abbott College, and represents our support for the Truth and Reconciliation of the Indigenous and First Nations Communities.

The flag unveiling event included speeches from Kim Tekakwitha Martin, Dean of Indigenous Education, Teresa Berghello, Academic Dean, and Darryl Diamond, Cree School Board.

The unveiling of the flag kicked off a week of events that included various lunch and learns, workshops and Orange Shirt Day activities, including a film screening of “Indian Horse” and guest speaker Amanda Lickers.

The path for Truth and Reconciliation begins with education. John Abbott College is dedicated to honouring and supporting all Indigenous and First Nations communities along every step of that path.
