Kirsty Campbell, John Abbott College English teacher since 2010, has released Coming Home, a folk album of original songs for voice and piano, on Spotify and other streaming platforms.
Campbell sings on the album and is accompanied by pianist Ian Baird, a major player in Montreal’s musical theatre scene.
Campbell composed each melody in this collection of songs, which are arranged for piano and voice by Québec conductor and producer Francis Choinière, who recently received the Mécénat Musica Prix Goyer for emerging artist.
Though the young maestro is known more for bringing celebrated film music to concert venues across Canada and the United States, his first passion was for composing, a fact that Campbell suggests is evident in Choinière’s “sensitive piano arrangements which combine the tender simplicity of folk melodies with harmonies and progressions that swell with the gravitas and emotional heft of a film score.”
The lyrics for each song on the EP, recorded at Studio Piccolo in Montreal, come from the love story told in Campbell’s fantasy novella, The Song of the Bard, and its sequel, A Child Born for Dancing. The songs tell of love, loss, and longing.
Mingling the genres of folk, classical, and pop, Coming Home offers an exciting contribution to new music for popular listening in Canada. Campbell will release an LP featuring more of this repertoire in 2024.
Kirsty Campbell, enseignante d’anglais au Cégep John Abbott depuis 2010, a lancé Coming Home, un album folk de chansons originales pour voix et piano, sur Spotify et d’autres plateformes de diffusion de musique.
Campbell chante sur l’album et est accompagné par le pianiste Ian Baird, un artiste majeur de la scène musicale montréalaise.
Campbell a composé chaque mélodie de cette collection de chansons, qui sont arrangées pour piano et voix par le chef d’orchestre et réalisateur québécois Francis Choinière, qui a récemment reçu le prix Mécénat Musica Goyer pour l’artiste émergent.
Bien que le jeune maestro soit connu pour avoir présenté des musiques de film célèbres dans des salles de concert à travers le Canada et les États-Unis, sa première passion était la composition, un fait qui, selon Campbell, est évident pour Choinière dans ses “arrangements sensibles pour piano qui combinent la tendre simplicité des mélodies folkloriques avec des harmonies et des progressions qui se développent avec la gravité et le poids émotionnel d’une musique de film”.
Les paroles de chaque chanson du EP, enregistrées au Studio Piccolo à Montréal, proviennent de l’histoire d’amour racontée dans le roman fantastique de Campbell, The Song of the Bard, et sa suite, A Child Born for Dancing. Les chansons parlent d’amour, de perte et de désir.
Combinant les genres folk, classique et pop, Coming Home apporte une contribution passionnante à la nouvelle musique populaire au Canada. Campbell lancera un album contenant d’autres pièces de ce répertoire en 2024.
