John Abbott College and the Foundation to Induct Five New Hall of Distinction Honourees

The John Abbott College Foundation is proud to induct five new members into its Hall of Distinction to recognize their exceptional contributions to the College community and society at large.
Adding to the 50 individuals already recognized, the 2026 honourees exemplify the values of excellence, service, dedication, and engagement that define the John Abbott spirit.

Since its creation in 2016, the John Abbott College Hall of Distinction has celebrated outstanding graduates, former staff members, and friends of the College whose achievements, leadership, and service have made a lasting impact on campus life and the wider community.

Nominated by their peers and selected for their remarkable contributions, the 2026 Hall of Distinction inductees are:

ALUMNI

• Akilah Newton
  Creative Arts graduate, activist, entrepreneur, author, and arts advocate. Through Overture with the Arts and her educational and media initiatives, Akilah has empowered more than 95,000 young people across Canada while championing diversity, inclusion, and access to the arts.
• Brent Lakatos
  Science graduate and one of Canada’s most decorated Paralympians. A world-class wheelchair racer and multiple Paralympic medalist, Brent’s perseverance, athletic excellence, and determination continue to inspire audiences around the globe.

RETIRED EMPLOYEE

• Dr. Richard Germain
  Health Sciences alumnus and longtime physician at John Abbott College. For nearly 30 years, Dr. Germain has provided exceptional care, guidance, and support to thousands of students while helping shape the College’s health and wellness services.

FRIENDS OF THE COLLEGE

• Lucie Fournier (posthumously)
  Community leader, fundraiser, and former Executive Director of the John Abbott College Foundation. Lucie’s visionary leadership helped strengthen both the Foundation and the West Island community, creating opportunities that continue to benefit students today.
• Dr. Peter Bender (posthumously)
  Founding faculty member, psychology professor, coach, mentor, and community leader. During a remarkable 53-year association with John Abbott College, Peter inspired generations of students and made an enduring contribution to academic and student life.

The induction ceremony will take place on September 17, 2026.
