- This program planner is for students who are certificate holders to English-language education AND who are placed at the 101 in college level French or lower.
- This program planner is for students who are certificate holders to English-language education AND who are placed at the 102 or 103 in college level French.
- This program planner is for students who are non-certificate holders.
- Students will be preregistered in common classes in all required Science and Social Science courses, as long as they have the prerequisites. These courses are indicated by a star (*).
- Students who require a mise à niveau English or French course will be required to pass it before they can take their introductory course in English or French.
- Substitutions are granted for the two complementary courses which are normally part of the General Education component.
- Students will be required to pass a ministerial Exam of the English or French Language. Which exam a student writes will depend on if they are a holder of a certificate of eligibility for English education.
- Students will also be required to pass a Comprehensive Assessment in Science and in Social Science.
- For a student to remain in the Double DEC Program (200.12), the student must be registered in at least one required Science course and one required Social Science course in each semester until the completion of the required courses in both programs. Any exceptions must be approved by the Program Coordinator.

Differential Calculus | 201-SN2-RE
Prerequisite: SEE MATHEMATICS SEQUENCE CHART
This course includes a review of algebra, functions, limits, continuity; differentiation of algebraic, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions; related rates, curve sketching, optimization, including word problems, antiderivatives, definite integrals and areas.
Students who do not meet the minimum requirement for 201-SN2 (at least 70% in Sec. V Math) will be offered a 1-hour weekly tutorial where they will get support from a Mathematics teacher. Students will also be moved into the Pathways program. For more information, please see Pathways

General Chemistry | 202-SN1-RE
The course initially reviews the use of chemical language and applications of quantitative analysis of chemical systems. The course then introduces the properties of elements and periodic trends, which are fundamental to understanding the structure of matter. Finally, macroscopic properties of matter are studied, identifying relevant intermolecular forces and their effect on properties (for example phase transitions and solubility). Deductive reasoning is used to explain and to predict chemical and physical behaviour. The study of molecular structures is essential to prepare the student for further studies in chemistry and in modern biology.

Introduction to Social Science | 300-101-AB
This course provides an overview of the social sciences, focusing on how we know what we know, and the scientific method as applied to social sciences. Students learn and practice foundational skills that are vital to success in all their social science courses including library research, reading and understanding texts, writing skills, the use of technology for academic work, working effectively in groups and presenting information in both written and oral forms.
World History | 330-102-AB
This course will survey the history of the world from the 15th century to the contemporary world. It will focus on major cultural, social, economic, and political events, examining the various interactions and exchanges between regions, states, and individuals. The course will furthermore recognize historical legacies prior to the 15th century that have had an impact on the formation of the West and of the modern and contemporary world. With the goal of developing critical thinking skills in studying historical realities and sources, students will examine and interpret the ideological, religious, and political transformations which led to modern, global society, placing current events into a historical perspective.

Chemistry of Solutions / Chimie des solutions | 202-SN2-RE / 202-SF2-AB
Countless chemical processes take place in solution, including those of biological systems, industry, and at home; Chemistry of Solutions is contextualized to the world in which we live. Students are provided with a thorough description of properties of solutions and the chemical processes occurring in them. The course also develops problem-solving strategies, exercising logical deduction.

The course covers the following basic concepts: limits, derivatives, indefinite and definite integrals, sequences, infinite series, power series involving real-valued functions of one variable (including algebraic, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions).

Probability and Statistics | 201-SN1-RE
The course presents methods of basic statistics in a way that emphasizes working with data and mastering statistical reasoning. Using real examples from both the natural and health sciences, the course discusses not only the traditional topics of probability and inference, but also the production of data (experiments and observational studies) and the analysis of data (data visualization)
*Students may be pre-registered in either this course or Programming in Science in 1st semester. They will be pre-registered in the other course in 2nd semester.
Introduction to Psychology | 350-101-AB *
This course introduces students to the scientific study of specific aspects of human behaviour and mental processes including: (1) the evolution of psychological thought and the identification of major psychological perspectives; (2) research methods in the study of Psychology; (3) the biological basis of behaviour, including the structure and function of the brain and nervous systems; (4) cognitive and emotional processes and, (5) learning and human adaptation. Students acquire the basic concepts and processes associated with the study of human behaviour. Further emphasis is placed on the understanding of how this knowledge and these abilities may relate to our lives and how they may apply in varying cultures.

FRENCH | 602-1xx-MQ
Every student needs one of each of the Block “A” and Block “B” courses in order to complete their DEC. For each block, there are four levels of courses: Level 1 , Level 2 , Level 3 and Level 4.
Placement in the appropriate level of French is determined by the students’ high school marks. The French Department reserves the right to change the placement of a student upon written notice. Students take the Block “B” course at the same level as the Block “A” course.
If placement determines that students do not have a college level of proficiency in French, students may be required to take remedial courses to upgrade their knowledge of the language. Click here to view courses list.

Programming in Science | 420-SN1-RE
This course introduces structured and disciplined approaches to computer programming and problem solving in a scientific context. Students will gain the ability to analyze a word problem and design an algorithm to solve it. This includes implementation of the algorithm in Python, verification of correctness and accuracy of the algorithm, and displaying results either textually or graphically.
*Students may be pre-registered in either this course or Probability and Statistics in 1st semester. They will be pre-registered in the other course in 2nd semester.
Mechanics | 203-SN1-RE *
Topics covered in this basic mechanics course include linear and rotational kinematics, trajectories, Newton’s laws of motion, work, energy and momentum. Emphasis is placed on problem solving and laboratory work. Many laboratory exercises involve using computers for data acquisition, and students are encouraged to use computers to analyze data and plot graphs.
Introduction to Macroeconomics | 383-101-AB
Macroeconomics is one of the compulsory Social Science courses. It is a prerequisite for all economics courses. It introduces students to concepts such as employment, inflation and banking, which are essential in understanding our society and making effective economic decisions. This course is cumulative in nature and requires that you keep up to date at all times. You should acquire sufficient knowledge to enable you to pursue economic courses at the university level.

Cellular Biology | 101-SN1-RE
In this course, students will be introduced to the fundamental principles of life and how it is organized at the cellular and molecular level. Cell structure and function will be characterized with particular focus on cell division and metabolism. The role of DNA in storing and transmitting biological information will be explored through a focus on gene expression and genetics. Laboratory experiments and activities will reinforce these principles, with a series of sequential labs that introduce students to applied biotechnologies such as genetic engineering, cell transformation, and DNA amplification (PCR).

Waves and Modern Physics | 203-SN3-RE
In this course the student is introduced to different types of oscillatory motion, both mechanical and electromagnetic. Concepts of amplitude, frequency, wavelength, and wave speed are used to describe and predict wave motion in strings and air. Interference and diffraction of light are examined by considering the wave nature of light. Wave-particle duality and quantum theory are explored in the section on modern physics, which includes such topics as blackbody radiation, the photoelectric effect, the Bohr atom, matter waves, and nuclear decay.

Research and Qualitative methods | 300-222-AB
How do we know the things that we know? How can we understand why people do the things that they do? Understanding human behaviour is at the root of all social science research. Research results can be theoretical or descriptive and/or it can be used for more applied purposes such as making changes in society to improve people’s lives. In this course students will learn how to apply qualitative methods in the Social Sciences. Students will learn how to ask questions, collect data, analyse data and finally to interpret results. In doing so students will be able to answer some of the questions they have about society, human interactions and relationships, and human behaviour.

In this course, students will undertake a project in which they will demonstrate the integration of the knowledge and skills that they have acquired during their Science Program studies. Students will use their knowledge from at least two scientific fields as well as demonstrate their research/modeling/design, organization, presentation, and language/communication skills.
Social Science Integrative Project | 300-303-AB
The student is expected to demonstrate acquired skills and knowledge in the Social Sciences by completing a written paper on a Social Science topic. This is done in four stages: topic development, literature search and evaluation (including oral), draft and final paper, and reflection on learning in the program. The written paper, oral justification, and program reflection serve as the Comprehensive Assessment in the Social Science program

Electricity and Magnetism / Électricité et magnétisme | 203-SN2-RE / 203-SF2-AB
The student is introduced to the basic concepts of electric charge and electric fields; using these concepts the electrical properties of insulators and conductors are examined. An understanding of circuit elements such as resistors, seats of emf, capacitors is developed, circuits are analysed, and magnetic forces and fields are studied at an introductory level. Electrical appliances now surround us in our everyday lives; studying the concepts developed in this course provides the student with a greater understanding of the phenomena associated with technological advances of the last two hundred years.

Ecology and Evolution / Écologie et évolution | 101-SN2-RE / 101-SF2-AB
In this course, students will be introduced to the mechanisms of evolution and their effects on the diversity of living organisms, the fundamentals of ecology and the interactions between humans and the biosphere (e.g., climate change). As in the other sciences, biology gathers and analyzes data using the scientific method. Living things are subject to the same laws that are explored in other science courses. As a student in this course, you will also be expected to accurately apply the scientific method, develop, and perform a research procedure.
