Academic Advising

Academic Success Centre (ASC)

(MIO: Academic success), email: academicsuccesscentre@johnabbott.qc.ca (follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) for essay writing support for college papers, ELL (English Language Learner) support along with peer tutoring on many of the college’s current subjects. Also, the ASC offers many types of workshops to help develop strong study skills. Our resources are available on TEAMS and on campus.

Access Centre

Our mandate is to collaborate with teachers, staff, and outside agencies in order to offer accommodations to students who have limitations and/or incapacities resulting from a specific diagnosis and/or medical condition.Our goal is to empower students who require accommodations to become autonomous and self-regulated learners for their future endeavors by striving to give them an equal opportunity to learn and succeed.

If you are a student who had an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) in high school and wish to request your accommodations at John Abbott College, please click here to complete the Student Accommodation Request Form and attach your medical documentation.

Campus Store

The Campus Store is the location for official John Abbott College books, course packs, stationary supplies, and merchandise. These items can be purchased in-store at SH-147 or online at https://jac.bookware3000.ca/. Pick-up and delivery options are available.

Casgrain Sports Centre

The Casgrain Sports Centre is home to the John Abbott gymnasiums, weight rooms, dance studio and squash courts.

During weekdays, free access is offered to staff and students when facilities are not in use by the Physical Education department. For the exact daytime schedule or for additional information, present yourself to the Sports Centre counter or contact us at: sportscentre@johnabbott.qc.ca.

During weeknights and weekends, discounted access fees are offered to staff and students ($5.00 for daily access, 50% off yearly memberships). For more information about our operations outside of school hours, please visit:

Counselling

The Psychological and Career Counselling Service, located in H-138, offers a range of mental health and well-being services, both in-person and virtually.  For more information about how to access our services, please send an MIO to General Counselling or stop by H-138.

Our Peer Support Program offers students the opportunity to receive support from fellow John Abbott students trained in active listening. For more information about our Peer Support Program or to access the service, please send an MIO to Peer Support.

To sign up for one of our 4-week Career Exploration Workshops, MIO: Career Exploration Workshop and we will provide workshop dates and registration information. Workshops run throughout the semester; the workshop fee is $25+tax.

The Sexual Assault Resource Team (SART) provides information, support and referrals to anyone affected by sexual violence in the John Abbott Community. To contact SART, MIO: SART; email: sart@johnabbott.qc.ca; or call SART help line: 514-457-6610 ext. 5555.

Harassment Resource Persons (Kristin Morse, c.o. Psychotherapist) is available to provide support to the John Abbott Community in situations of psychological harassment, abuse of power, and/or violence.

The GuardMe Student Support Program provides John Abbott College students with 24/7 confidential mental health support, from anywhere in the world!
You can be matched with a counsellor that speaks your language, is from a similar culture, or shares similar lived experiences and/or identities. Services are available at no cost to you. Real-time support is available via telephone and chat. Appointment-based support is available over the phone, via video and in-person.

Health and Wellness Centre

The Health and Wellness Centre staff welcomes you!
We are located in H-138 Student Services.

Drop-in health consultations with nurse(s) are available Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Nurse and Doctor appointments are available by appointment for a variety of health consultations: general checkups, physical and mental health issues, contraception, pregnancy testing, sexually transmitted infections: testing and treatment. Arrangements may also be made for students requiring desensitization allergy shots.

The Health and Wellness Centre also offers concussion support via a multi-disciplinary concussion management team (CMT). Students who sustain head injuries/concussions are encouraged to visit the Health and Wellness Centre regardless whether their injury occurred at the college, or in the community.

  • MIO Health and Wellness Centre.

Please note:
John Abbott College students are also welcome to request appointments with a nurse, or physician at the CLSC Lac St. Louis Youth Clinic regardless of their home address.

Issues related to Passwords, your Office.com account, Microsoft TEAMS, Moodle or downloading software, students can send an email to: itsupport@johnabbott.qc.ca or go to the Microsoft Team called Student Peer Online Support Group (Within Teams, click on “Join or create team” and either click directly on “Student Peer Online Support Group” if you see it there or use the “Search teams” search bar in the top right and enter the team name if you don’t see it in your group of Teams).

Language Resource Centre

The Language Resource Centre is a quiet study area for students taking a language course at the College. Students have access to 33 networked computers, many in study cubicles, headsets with recording function and multilingual keyboards formatted for all the language course material and more.

The study area is located in Penfield-006 and is beside the 2 multi-media computer language labs (P-008 & P-022).

Resources include:

  • All of the course material used in the computer language labs is available in the study area on the student computers.
  • Audio-visual programs for French, Spanish, Italian, German and Mandarin with course texts and answers for improving comprehension and grammar skills.
  • Interactive computer programs to develop reading, writing, speaking and comprehension skills.
  • Internet-based language programs allowing students to study anywhere, anytime by purchasing a 4-month license for a nominal fee.
  • The Antidote computer program combines grammar, spellcheck, dictionary and guides that correct as you write.
  • Pronunciation Power 1 & 2 has interactive lessons and exercises to hear and produce the 52 sounds of English.
  • The Acting with an accent audio program is available to Theatre students to perfect their stage voice.
  • A variety of dictionaries for reference or to borrow with a JAC id card.
  • A group study room.

Language Resource Centre

  • The Language Resource Centre is an inviting study area with many resources to support students succeed in their language courses at John Abbott College. The Centre also offers support to students wanting to further develop their skills in a chosen language. The Centre is comprised of an interactive learning and study room as well as 2 multi-media computer language classrooms. All rooms are equipped with networked computers, many located in individual study cubicles, headsets with recording functionality, multilingual keyboards, Wi-Fi, printers, overhead speakers, and projectors. The interactive learning and study room also includes a SMART Board®, and conference size tables. Students can access or borrow a variety of dictionaries and reference tools as needed and even trade a book in any language through our take a book/leave a book display.
  • The Language Resource Centre also hosts a range of conversation groups in various languages, organized in collaboration with the Academic Success Centre. In addition, it offers engaging and interactive learning activities such as Kahoot quizzes, educational trivia games and movie screenings that make learning a language fun, while exploring different cultures and building real-world communication skills.
