  • This program planner is for students who are certificate holders to English-language education AND who are placed at the 101 in college level French or lower.
  • This program planner is for students who are certificate holders to English-language education AND who are placed at the 102 or 103 in college level French.
  • This program planner is for students who are non-certificate holders.

  • Students who require a mise à niveau English or French course will be required to pass it before they can take their introductory course in English or French.
  • Students will be required to pass a Ministerial Exam of Language of Instruction and a Program Comprehensive Assessment in Science.

Differential Calculus | 201-SN2-RE

Prerequisite: SEE MATHEMATICS SEQUENCE CHART

This course includes a review of algebra, functions, limits, continuity; differentiation of algebraic, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions; related rates, curve sketching, optimization, including word problems, antiderivatives, definite integrals and areas.

Students who do not meet the minimum requirement for 201-SN2 (at least 70% in Sec. V Math) will be offered a 1-hour weekly tutorial where they will get support from a Mathematics teacher. Students will also be moved into the Pathways program. For more information, please see Pathways

General Chemistry | 202-SN1-RE

Prerequisite: SEE SCIENCE PLACEMENT CHART

The course initially reviews the use of chemical language and applications of quantitative analysis of chemical systems. The course then introduces the properties of elements and periodic trends, which are fundamental to understanding the structure of matter. Finally, macroscopic properties of matter are studied, identifying relevant intermolecular forces and their effect on properties (for example phase transitions and solubility). Deductive reasoning is used to explain and to predict chemical and physical behaviour.  The study of molecular structures is essential to prepare the student for further studies in chemistry and in modern biology.

Students who do not meet the minimum requirement for 202-SN1 (at least 70% in Sec. V Chemistry) will be offered a 1-hour weekly tutorial where they will get support from a Chemistry teacher. Students will also be moved into the Pathways program. For more information, please see Pathways

Mechanics | 203-SN1-RE

Prerequisite: SEE SCIENCE PLACEMENT CHART

Concepts such as force, rotational motion, acceleration, energy and momentum have applications in all the science disciplines. In Mechanics, students will develop an understanding of forces, energy and the gravitational force field, which prepares them for the physics courses that follow. For example, the wave mechanics seen in Waves and Modern Physics require an understanding of force and energy. Electricity and Magnetism requires an understanding of vectors, projectile motion and magnetic and electric force fields.

Students who do not meet the minimum requirement for 203-SN1 (at least 70% in Sec. V Physics) will be offered a 1-hour weekly tutorial where they will get support from a Physics teacher. Students will also be moved into the Pathways program. For more information, please see Pathways

Programming in Science | 420-SN1-RE

This course introduces structured and disciplined approaches to computer programming and problem solving in a scientific context. Students will gain the ability to analyze a word problem and design an algorithm to solve it. This includes implementation of the algorithm in Python, verification of correctness and accuracy of the algorithm, and displaying results either textually or graphically.

*Students may be pre-registered in either this course or Probability and Statistics in 1st semester. They will be pre-registered in the other course in 2nd semester.

Probability and Statistics | 201-SN1-RE

The course presents methods of basic statistics in a way that emphasizes working with data and mastering statistical reasoning. Using real examples from both the natural and health sciences, the course discusses not only the traditional topics of probability and inference, but also the production of data (experiments and observational studies) and the analysis of data (data visualization)

*Students may be pre-registered in either this course or Programming in Science in 1st semester. They will be pre-registered in the other course in 2nd semester.

Students are required to successfully complete three (3) Physical Education courses to complete their DEC. Courses 109-101-MQ and 109-102-MQ may be taken in either order, but both must be successfully completed before registering in 109-103-MQ. Click here to view courses list. 

COMPLEMENTARY COURSE

Complementary courses provide an opportunity for students to explore subjects outside their field of concentration and are offered in six different areas. Except for Liberal Arts, Arts & Sciences and Double DEC programs, students must take two (2) complementary courses as part of their General Education requirement.
Students are encouraged to select courses from subjects that are outside their program of study;
Students can take a course from each ensemble of the same domain;
Or
Students can take a course from either ensemble of two different domains;
Or
Students can take a course from the same ensemble of two different domains;

Integral Calculus / Calcul intégral | 201-SN3-RE / 201-SF3-AB

The course covers the following basic concepts: limits, derivatives, indefinite and definite integrals, sequences, infinite series, power series involving real-valued functions of one variable (including algebraic, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions).

Pre-requisite: 201-SN2-RE

Chemistry of Solutions / Chimie des solutions | 202-SN2-RE / 202-SF2-AB

Countless chemical processes take place in solution, including those of biological systems, industry, and at home; Chemistry of Solutions is contextualized to the world in which we live. Students are provided with a thorough description of properties of solutions and the chemical processes occurring in them. The course also develops problem-solving strategies, exercising logical deduction.

Pre-requisite: 202-SN1-RE

Cellular Biology | 101-SN1-RE

In this course, students will be introduced to the fundamental principles of life and how it is organized at the cellular and molecular level. Cell structure and function will be characterized with particular focus on cell division and metabolism. The role of DNA in storing and transmitting biological information will be explored through a focus on gene expression and genetics. Laboratory experiments and activities will reinforce these principles, with a series of sequential labs that introduce students to applied biotechnologies such as genetic engineering, cell transformation, and DNA amplification (PCR).

Waves and Modern Physics | 203-SN3-RE

In this course the student is introduced to different types of oscillatory motion, both mechanical and electromagnetic. Concepts of amplitude, frequency, wavelength, and wave speed are used to describe and predict wave motion in strings and air. Interference and diffraction of light are examined by considering the wave nature of light. Wave-particle duality and quantum theory are explored in the section on modern physics, which includes such topics as blackbody radiation, the photoelectric effect, the Bohr atom, matter waves, and nuclear decay.

Ecology and Evolution / Écologie et évolution | 101-SN2-RE / 101-SF2-AB

In this course, students will be introduced to the mechanisms of evolution and their effects on the diversity of living organisms, the fundamentals of ecology and the interactions between humans and the biosphere (e.g., climate change). As in the other sciences, biology gathers and analyzes data using the scientific method. Living things are subject to the same laws that are explored in other science courses. As a student in this course, you will also be expected to accurately apply the scientific method, develop, and perform a research procedure.

Electricity and Magnetism / Électricité et magnétisme | 203-SN2-RE/ 203-SF2-AB

The student is introduced to the basic concepts of electric charge and electric fields; using these concepts the electrical properties of insulators and conductors are examined.  An understanding of circuit elements such as resistors, seats of emf, capacitors is developed, circuits are analysed, and magnetic forces and fields are studied at an introductory level.  Electrical appliances now surround us in our everyday lives; studying the concepts developed in this course provides the student with a greater understanding of the phenomena associated with technological advances of the last two hundred years.

Linear Algebra and Vector Geometry | 201-SN4-RE

The course will help the student understand the following basic concepts: systems of linear equations, matrices, determinants, two-dimensional and three-dimensional vectors from both an algebraic and a geometric perspective, applications of two-dimensional, three-dimensional and n-dimensional vectors. The course will emphasize the ways in which geometric and algebraic concepts reinforce each other, and the ways in which these concepts can be generalized and applied to practical situations.

In this course, students will undertake a project in which they will demonstrate the integration of the knowledge and skills that they have acquired during their Science Program studies. Students will use their knowledge from at least two scientific fields as well as demonstrate their research/modeling/design, organization, presentation, and language/communication skills.
