COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER TUTORING PROGRAM

• a local program at John Abbott College operated by the Academic Success Centre
• a service that pairs volunteer tutors with current college students looking for academic support in their courses

• gaining personal satisfaction from helping students
• connecting with others within the John Abbott College community

• participating in ASC volunteer appreciation events

• adults 18+ from the West Island, Montreal and surrounding areas who are interested in offering tutoring in specific subjects and/or reading and writing support.

• experience and education relevant to the subject(s) to be tutored

• strong listening and communication skills

• a sincere interest in and willingness to help others

• a sense of commitment to learning that supports the success of our students

• enthusiasm and pride in being part of the John Abbott College community

• spend a few hours of your time weekly during the college semester tutoring engaged and motivated students

• work with like-minded staff and other volunteers in a collaborative setting

• tutor in person in our new tutoring centre area in the College’s library and/or online in the ASC’s Peer Tutoring Team

Your time, your schedule: Let us know when you are available to volunteer, and we will coordinate day/time with the students.  

• provide the ASC with a current and complete curriculum vitae

• be interviewed by ASC Chairperson and staff member(s) 

• undergo police and reference checks 

• follow guidelines as outlined in John Abbott College’s Policy 4 (governing the college’s policy on psychological harassment, abuse of power, and violence) and Policy 24 (governing the college’s policy on sexual violence and promotion of a culture of consent at the college) Click here

• maintain professionalism (punctuality, consistency in attendance, appropriate dress)  

• follow ASC standards of tutoring (respect confidentiality, etc.) when working with our students 

• complete a mandatory ASC Tutor Training Workshop (1.5 hours in total) prior to working with the Centre 

• keep records of meetings with students, outlining their progress
