Un retour \u00e0 l’\u00e9cole peut vous rappeler une foule de souvenirs : votre premier jour dans une grande \u00e9cole, la salle o\u00f9 vous avez rencontr\u00e9 votre ami \u00e0 vie, la patinoire o\u00f9 vous avez marqu\u00e9 un but dans les derni\u00e8res secondes du match, et bien d’autres souvenirs.<\/p>\n

Pour Shawn Smith (Abbott ’97), c’est une grande source d’\u00e9motions. Pour lui, le C\u00e9gep John Abbott est plus qu’un b\u00e2timent, plus qu’une \u00e9cole, c’est le tremplin qui lui a donn\u00e9 le d\u00e9part dont il avait besoin pour devenir ce qu’il est aujourd’hui.<\/p>\n

Shawn Smith, M. Ed., CCC, LCT, est conseiller, psychoth\u00e9rapeute, entrepreneur et fondateur de Don’t dis-my-ability\u00ae Consultation Services Inc.<\/em> Shawn a re\u00e7u un diagnostic de TDAH de type inattentif \u00e0 l’\u00e2ge de 30 ans et de trouble du spectre autistique \u00e0 l’\u00e2ge de 44 ans. Il a fait de ces diagnostics une carri\u00e8re, aidant les autres \u00e0 travers des conseils individuels et familiaux pour les personnes neurodivergentes. Il prend \u00e9galement le temps de partager son expertise dans le cadre de conf\u00e9rences, telles que des tables rondes, des podcasts, des pr\u00e9sentations, et plus encore.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 la fin de ses \u00e9tudes secondaires au Nouveau-Brunswick, Shawn a re\u00e7u des offres de grandes universit\u00e9s canadiennes pour jouer au football. Malheureusement, il n’avait pas les notes n\u00e9cessaires pour s’inscrire dans l’une d’entre elles. \u00c0 cette \u00e9poque, l’\u00e9quipe de football du C\u00e9gep John Abbott a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 recruter des joueurs hors province pour la premi\u00e8re fois et a tent\u00e9 sa chance avec Shawn. Apr\u00e8s trois ans, et avec le soutien de ses entra\u00eeneurs acad\u00e9miques et de ses co\u00e9quipiers, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 du programme de sciences humaines, o\u00f9 il a acquis une pens\u00e9e critique et s’est passionn\u00e9 de psychologie et de sociologie. John Abbott lui a donn\u00e9 le syst\u00e8me de soutien qui lui manquait \u00e0 la maison et dont il avait besoin pour r\u00e9ussir.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s avoir obtenu son DEC, Shawn a obtenu un baccalaur\u00e9at d’arts en psychologie et en sociologie de l’Universit\u00e9 St-Thomas \u00e0 Fredericton, au Nouveau-Brunswick. Au moment o\u00f9 il a re\u00e7u son diagnostic de TDAH, il a pos\u00e9 sa candidature et a \u00e9t\u00e9 accept\u00e9 \u00e0 l’Universit\u00e9 du Nouveau-Brunswick dans le programme de ma\u00eetrise en \u00e9ducation – psychologie du conseil. Il a termin\u00e9 ses \u00e9tudes parmi l\u2019un des plus forts dans sa classe en 2010.<\/p>\n

Aujourd’hui, Shawn met \u00e0 profit son exp\u00e9rience et ses connaissances pour aider d’autres personnes atteintes de neurodiversit\u00e9.\u00a0 \u00ab Je ne souhaite mon exp\u00e9rience \u00e0 personne \u00bb, dit Shawn, \u201cmais je suis arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 un point o\u00f9 je ne l’\u00e9changerais pour rien au monde.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Selon l\u2019\u00e9cole de m\u00e9decine de Harvard, \u00ab la neurodiversit\u00e9 d\u00e9crit l’id\u00e9e que les gens vivent et interagissent avec le monde qui les entoure de nombreuses fa\u00e7ons diff\u00e9rentes ; il n’y a pas une seule \u201cbonne\u201d fa\u00e7on de penser, d’apprendre et de se comporter, et les diff\u00e9rences ne sont pas consid\u00e9r\u00e9es comme des d\u00e9ficits. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Au d\u00e9but du mois, Shawn s’est rendu au C\u00e9gep John Abbott, o\u00f9 il a pris le temps de pr\u00e9senter le th\u00e8me \u00ab Nourrir la neurodiversit\u00e9 \u00bb aux membres des services de conseil et du centre d’acc\u00e8s aux \u00e9tudiants. Chaque semestre, de plus en plus d’\u00e9tudiantes et d\u2019\u00e9tudiants demandent des plans d’\u00e9ducation personnalis\u00e9s et de l’aide pour surmonter leurs anxi\u00e9t\u00e9s quotidiennes. Dans sa pr\u00e9sentation, il a soulign\u00e9 l’importance de l’accessibilit\u00e9 et de \u00ab rencontrer les gens l\u00e0 o\u00f9 ils en sont. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Chaque \u00e9tudiante et \u00e9tudiant est diff\u00e9rent. Shawn pense qu’il est important de briser les m\u00e9thodes syst\u00e9miques de conseil aux individus et de trouver des moyens alternatifs qui ont du sens pour l’individu. Il a r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 passer plusieurs de ses cours \u00e0 l’\u00e9cole en les rendant int\u00e9ressants pour lui gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des dessins. Il a pu suivre un cours qui ne l’int\u00e9ressait pas et l’a r\u00e9ussi en terminant parmi l\u2019un des plus forts dans sa classe.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Lorsque j’entends le mot \u201c handicap \u201d, j’entends \u201c talent \u201d \u00bb, dit Shawn. \u00ab Lorsque je rencontre quelqu’un qui a un talent, je ne peux pas m’emp\u00eacher de l’aider. \u00bb Pour aider les personnes atteintes de neurodiversit\u00e9, il suffit d’avoir une conversation \u00e0 la fois et de poser la simple question : \u00ab comment puis-je aider? \u00bb Il s’agit de rencontrer les gens l\u00e0 o\u00f9 ils en sont<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Lorsqu’on lui demande quel conseil il donne au public pour soutenir la communaut\u00e9 neurodiverse, Shawn r\u00e9pond qu’il faut \u00eatre conscient de soi-m\u00eame et qu’il faut soigner, et non r\u00e9parer. \u00ab Nous ne sommes pas des machines bris\u00e9es qui ont besoin d’\u00eatre r\u00e9par\u00e9es, \u00bb explique-t-il.<\/p>\n

Shawn a \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9 \u00e0 donner des conf\u00e9rences dans de grandes universit\u00e9s am\u00e9ricaines telles que l’universit\u00e9 de Miami et l’universit\u00e9 de Florida State. Il fait actuellement partie du conseil consultatif du programme Include<\/em> de l’universit\u00e9 du Connecticut, qui se concentre sur le recrutement et la r\u00e9tention d’\u00e9tudiant(e)s neurodivergents dans le domaine de l’ing\u00e9nierie.<\/p>\n

John Abbott fera toujours partie de la vie de Shawn, non seulement \u00e9motionnellement, mais aussi physiquement. Avec le symbole de John Abbott tatou\u00e9 sur son bras et un chien nomm\u00e9 Abbott qui a depuis pass\u00e9 le pont de l’arc-en-ciel, Shawn continuera \u00e0 se souvenir de l’impact que le C\u00e9gep John Abbott a eu sur sa vie.<\/p>\n
