Anna Whitton Memorial Bursary

History Established to honour the memory of Anna Whitton who had a long history with John Abbott College, as a student and as an employee from 1977 to 2011. Anna’s passion for the College and its students over the decades was her life’s work and inspiration.

CAE Scholarship

History This scholarship is awarded annually to a student graduating from John Abbott College and pursuing university studies in an Engineering or Science program the following semester. This scholarship is to be awarded to a student of high academic standing who has demonstrated leadership ability and a keen understanding of service to society.

The Dr. Marcia Kovitz Sociology Award

History Established by the Sociology Department in 2016 upon Dr. Kovitz’s retirement after 44 years of teaching, this award is given to a graduating student who has studied Sociology, faced personal or social challenges, shown a commitment to social change, and who will be continuing his/her studies.

  • Must be a full-time student, in their final semester at John Abbott College
  • Good academic standing
  • Must demonstrate financial need to continue their studies
  • Must show an intention to continue studying Sociology at university
  • The recipient will be selected by members of the Sociology Department

Freda and Irwin Browns Award

History In recognition of the need to support the development of young artists, Freda and Irwin Browns created the Freda and Irwin Browns Award. This generous award of $500 is given annually to a current student of the Visual Arts Program who exemplifies a passion for pursuing a career in the arts, specifically with an interest and talent in the domain of traditional and/or contemporary printmaking.
Eligibility / Criteria FOR STUDENTS IN VISUAL ARTS ONLY

  • Must be a full-time student registered in their second year in the Visual Arts program and must have demonstrated an aptitude for printmaking during their first year
  • Be in good academic standing with evident potential for academic success
  • Students must write a letter outlining their interest in the discipline of printmaking and how this award would help them
  • Priority will be given to a student who demonstrates financial need

The Gail Pflaster Scholarship

History Recognizing an outstanding female student who will be graduating from John Abbott College and entering University with the desire to study psychology. This award was established in 2017 by bequest of the late Dr. Gail Pflaster. Dr. Pflaster completed her doctorate at Teachers College, Columbia University and thereafter carried out post-doctoral work at McGill University, Montreal. She later became a professor of psychology at John Abbott College. Her teaching career spanned 40 years in the U.S. and Canada.

History To honour Kirk MacGeachy and the contribution he made to the College’s Geosciences faculty, this bursary is awarded each year to a serious and engaged Geology and/or Art student struggling with financial difficulties.

History The bursary is awarded to a serious and engaged Visual Arts student who is committed to learning and may have financial difficulties or other challenges be they cultural, gender, or learning related.

  • Be enrolled in the four-semester Visual Arts program

History Established by Ellen Moore, a former coordinator of the Liberal Arts Program, the scholarship is awarded each spring to help a graduating student in the Liberal Arts Program with his/her university studies.

  • Demonstrate Financial Need
  • Academic Standing: average of 80%+
  • Graduating Liberal Arts student pursuing undergraduate degree

Nicholas Sidorenko Memorial Scholarship

History Given in memory of former-Dean Catherine Sidorenko’s son Nicholas, who passed away after living for six years with a heart transplant, to a full-time Science student who is involved in extra-curricular activities and, preferably, has faced major health challenges.
