Overview

PROGRAM GOALS AND PROFESSIONAL PERPECTIVE

The market for mobile application development is constantly growing. Mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) are becoming more and more efficient. Beyond the devices themselves, their great strength resides in the applications to which they give access and that affects all fields. The program, leading to the Attestation d’études collégiales, aims to train specialized technicians that are able to meet the increasing needs for labour in this sector.

Such a technician will be able to perform the tasks directly related to Mobile Application Development, both native and Web, on different existing mobile platforms such as Android or IOS. This program will offer the opportunity to work either as a self-employed worker or in the public or private sectors.

The demand for mobile application developers in the current labor market is high, and is expected to grow significantly over the next few years. Mobile Application Development is key to conquering new markets and to sustaining the visibility of any business or organization.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM

By the end of this program, the student will be able to:

  • Design the architecture of a mobile application
  • Develop a mobile application
  • Organize the information required in the context of mobile devices
  • Manage the migration of an application between different platforms
  • Plan the development of the mobile version of a website
  • Ensure the quality of the application
  • Release the mobile application into the market

The market for the development of mobile applications platforms is continuously expanding as indicated in the statistics below:

  • According to the Information and Communications Technology Council, the Industry revenues are expected to reach $2.2-billion in 2016, as Canadians increasingly buy advanced smartphones with applications for everything from mapping and directions to social networking, sports scores, media apps and restaurant reviews. Technical employees – such as programmers – receive an average salary of about $68,000, and as many as 51,000 Canadians are employed in mobile software.[1]
  • In 2015, 57% of households have at least one smartphone
  • World sales of tablets are stable, and 50.7% of Quebec households have at least one digital tablet
  • In Québec, by 2015, 25% of mobile users make online purchases, an increase of 6% over the previous year.
  • In Quebec, in 2013, close to one million people accessed their bank accounts to check their balances or view statements, and about 700,000 people had banking from their mobile device.

Our program leads to an AEC (Attestation d’études collégiales) and aims to train specialized technicians to meet the growing needs of skilled labor in this sector. Graduates will have the opportunity to work either as a self-employed worker or in the public or private sectors.

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must obtain a referral from Emploi-Québec in order to be considered for this program. Please visit your local Centre Local d’Emploi and provide contract no. 535682-0 to the agent.

In addition to this, applicants must meet the admission requirements for programs leading to an Attestation d’études collégiales (AEC).

SPECIAL ADMISSION CONDITIONS

Applicants should possess some computer knowledge or relevant work experience in the field of computer science.  A mandatory test focusing on logic and problem-solving skills, as well as computer knowledge, will be administered by the Centre for Continuing Education.

An interview by the admissions committee may be scheduled once the testing is complete, to evaluate the match between the candidates’ learning and career goals and the teaching objectives of the program.

Working knowledge of French is considered an asset.
